What it does

Takes GP-supplied deal attribution, pedigree data, and fund documents and returns a four-dimension scorecard covering team quality, strategy credibility, operational readiness, and fund terms. The output is an invest, conditional, watch, or pass verdict with numbered pre-close conditions.

Why it matters

First-time and spin-out GPs have no audited fund-level track record. The deal history they present comes from a prior employer, attribution is self-reported, and the infrastructure needed to manage an institutional fund may not yet exist. Without a structured framework, LPs either over-rely on relationships and pedigree or spend weeks building their own ad-hoc diligence checklist.

How it's done today

An LP analyst reviews the GP's pitch deck and deal list, calls a handful of references, and leans on the general partner's name recognition. Attribution discounts are rarely applied. Operational due diligence is light, often a checklist emailed to the GP without a scoring methodology. The senior team member forms a view and writes a memo from memory.

When to use it

Reach for it

Activate when an LP is evaluating a first-time fund, second-time fund, or spin-out team: no audited fund-level financials, track record attributed from a prior employer, or a fund size that requires calibrating against the team's confirmed deal history.

Not the right tool

Not for established GPs with two or more fully realized prior funds under their own name. Use gp-performance-evaluator for that. If you only need to pressure-test a specific term sheet, use fund-terms-comparator instead.

Example use case

A two-person team spun out of a large institutional value-add manager is raising a $275M multifamily fund targeting Southeast secondary markets. The skill reconstructs the attribution-adjusted track record across 11 confirmed deals, scores pedigree at 49 out of 60, finds operational readiness at 91 out of 100 with Alter Domus and Kirkland already contracted, and returns a 4.45 weighted score with three pre-close conditions including written non-compete confirmation.

Works with
Limitations

The scorecard is only as good as the inputs. Attribution weights require third-party confirmation; deals confirmed only by the GP are excluded. Reference calls are the LP's responsibility to execute. The skill provides the framework and flags gaps but does not conduct background checks or make legal determinations about non-compete enforceability.
